Frequently Asked Questions

How can we help?

Who teaches The Academies?

Academies instructors are all current Harvard students who must pass a rigorous interview process. Our instructor acceptance rate is around 20%. All of our instructors must show advanced proficiency in their subject.

Who runs the programs?

The Academies is brought to you by Harvard undergraduates who work for Harvard Student Agencies (HSA). HSA is the largest student-run company in the world, and the original Harvard startup.

Who can participate in the programs?

Our programs are typically for students in grades 9-12, but we accept exceptional 8th graders, as well. Unfortunately, we are unable to take any student under 13 years old.

How much do the programs cost?
  • Our Virtual Academies are $300 for an 8-hour program (Sat-Sun).
  • Our On-Campus Summer Academies are $1,600 for a 40-hour program on Harvard’s campus (M-F).
  • We offer need-based financial aid on a case-by-case basis.
Is housing included in tuition?

Housing is not included in tuition. We encourage students to seek their own lodging in and around Harvard Square.

Harvard Square (less than a 5-minute walk):

  • Harvard Square Hotel
  • Hotel Veritas
  • Harvard Square Hotel
  • Sheraton Commander
  • The Charles Hotel

Cambridge / Allston (~10-minute walk):

  • Studio Allston Hotel
  • DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Boston - Cambridge
  • Courtyard by Marriott Boston Cambridge

Somerville / Porter Square (short Uber/Lyft or subway ride):

  • Cambria Hotel Boston Somerville
  • Hotel 1868
  • Porter Square Hotel
What do you look for in an application?

Our applications are primarily essay-based. We look for students who show demonstrated interest, intellectual curiosity, and strong academic history.

Do the programs require prior knowledge or experience?

Our programs cover challenging, fast-paced material, but they do not require prior knowledge or experience. Our curricula are designed to cater to those with all levels of experience.

The only exception is our Pre-Med: Human Anatomy and Physiology Academy, which requires a basic understanding of biology.

Can I cancel my enrollment in a program?

ON-CAMPUS:

  • Full refund if you cancel by May 20th.
  • 50% refund if you cancel by June 4th.
  • No refund if you cancel after June 4th.
  • If there are extenuating and uncontrollable circumstances, this policy may be waived on a case-by-case basis. If you believe this applies to you, please contact us at academies@hsa.net.

VIRTUAL:

  • Full refund up to two weeks before the program start date.
  • If a cancellation occurs within two weeks of the start of the program, a refund of $50 will be issued to the original method of payment.
Can I reschedule my program enrollment?

Students are welcome to reschedule their enrollment, at no additional cost, to a later program date by reaching out to academies@hsa.net, only if initiated by the Monday before the originally scheduled program.

Students will not be able to reschedule their enrollment after the Monday deadline. If you are unable to make it to the program, we can only provide a $50 refund in this situation per our cancellation policy. Students will have to re-enroll for their new preferred date.
